Body's location is still unknown

MEMPHIS - When Frances Wright walked slowly past a tired, gray-haired man in shackles and a wheelchair in a small federal magistrate's courtroom, for a brief moment she felt a tinge of sorrow for him.

It was an unexpected reaction to have to Dale Mardis, the baggy-eyed man in orange coveralls, who authorities believe killed her husband seven years ago.

"He didn't look too happy, and I know he wishes life had a rewind button, but it doesn't," said Wright, the widow of Shelby County Code Enforcement inspector Mickey Wright, whose body has never been found. "I'm hoping eventually his heart will soften, and I guess we'll never give up hope that we'll retrieve Mickey's remains. I just hope he doesn't take it with him. It won't change anything, but we'd like to know."

Mardis, a 54-year-old former gun dealer who suffers from diabetes and other ailments, was indicted on federal charges of killing Wright with a firearm because of his race, a hate crime that carries punishment of up to death.
